Thierry Henry may have scored 228 goals in an Arsenal shirt, but Arsene Wenger is adamant that nobody saw it coming - not even Thierry himself.
The Arsenal legend arrived at the club from Monaco in 1999 and it took him nine games to get off the mark, before he eventually scored in the 79th minute of a 1-0 win at Southampton.
Some 227 goals later and Henry had etched his name in history, but Wenger says the way he exploded took everyone by surprise.
“Never, I could never have expected it,” the manager told Arsenal Player. “I believe that Thierry Henry would tell you today, honestly, that he never expected to have that impressive number after [that goal at Southampton].
“It was a good surprise but that’s why we love the game as well. Sometimes it surprises!
“He has shown that it was not an accident, he showed that later.”
