Lisa Evans is still in disbelief.
The winger helped Scotland automatically qualify for their very first Women’s World Cup against the odds with two assists against Switzerland, and is hoping she can carry her international form into Sunday’s Women’s Super League opener against Liverpool.
“I don’t think it’s still fully sunk in to be honest,” she told Arsenal.com. “It’s just absolutely incredible. I just remember that feeling, seeing all the girls running on to the pitch and thinking, ‘We’ve done it, we’ve done it’. I was just overcome with emotion, cried for a little bit, laughed, joked, screamed. I didn’t know what to do!
“I know Switzerland see themselves as underdogs as well, but with the result over there in Switzerland as well, we knew it would be hard to recover that in the return game in Scotland.
“We knew that we had the players to do it and that we would create chances for ourselves. If we could take those chances then I knew we could do it. Then we were just relying on Switzerland to slip up. That happened and it was absolutely unreal.
“I’m just hoping it will inject a bit of energy and a bit of positivity because we’ve come back and we’re just absolutely buzzing. We’ve now got a big game to concentrate on in the Women’s Super League, so hopefully we can bring that energy and take it into the game with us.”
Our international stars will return to domestic action this weekend when we host Liverpool at Meadow Park on Sunday, September 9. Kick-off is at 12.30pm and you can still buy tickets here
