Interview

‘We won’t mope around… we’ll learn and move on’

We were dealt our first defeat since August on Saturday, beaten 4-0 at Liverpool.

The result saw Aaron Ramsdale finish on the losing side for the first time since making his debut for us earlier this season. After the match, he spoke to Arsenal Media - and here’s what he said.

on how tough the result is to take…

I think it shows the quality that they’ve got and where we want to get to. This game isn’t going to define our season. It’s possibly the toughest place to come in the Premier League. This is where we want to get to. We’re not going to hide away from the fact that they’ve won the Champions League and the Premier League in recent years. For the first 30 to 40 minutes, we did well - they might have had more possession and more shots, but we contained them. At the start of the second half, we gave them chances and from then on, it was a mountain to climb. It was one of those nights but it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and this team will go again. We’ll learn from tonight.

on Liverpool’s strong start to the second half…

Yeah, I think that’s where we need to learn on the pitch. We obviously had our gameplan but as a young team, sometimes we stick to the gameplan too much and we need to learn to possibly be strong with each other and talk more to try and weather the storm. The quality that they’ve got - we’re aspiring to get there. We’re working and like I say, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

on the importance of bouncing back quickly…

Yeah, definitely - the boss has just said it in there and a couple of us have said it as well. We won’t have people moping around with their heads down. We’ll come in and evaluate the game. We’re an honest bunch of players. Mistakes happen - we want to play that way, so full focus now ahead of Newcastle. Like you say, we’ve been on a 10-match unbeaten run, with eight of those in the league, so we can hopefully start another [run] like that.

on if these are moments where you find out more about a team…

Yeah, I believe so. After three games, everyone was talking about us and then you produce a mini-run. I don’t feel like anyone hid today, although there were mistakes made from all of us. We’re still trying to play our philosophy and that’s the way it goes. Hopefully we get to this stage in our career with our team where we’ll be doing this to other teams.
