Nuno Tavares’ Portugal earned their first point at the U21 European Championships after drawing 1-1 with the Netherlands, however now have a mountain to climb if they are to remain in the competition past the group stage.
Nuno played the full 90 minutes in Tbilisi as he aimed to help his side bounce back after tasting a shock defeat to Georgia in their opening group game, but the draw has dented their chances of trying to claim a first-ever title at this level.
The Young Selecao began brightly against the Dutch and took the lead on 20 minutes through Andre Almeida, but were pegged back 12 minutes from time when Ajax striker Brian Brobbey equalised.
The result means that Portugal are bottom of the group going into the final round of group fixtures on Tuesday, when they must beat Belgium and hope that the Netherlands fail to beat Georgia to stand any chance of progressing further in the competition.
