‘The reception I got was something else’

Danielle Carter

After spending more than eight months on the sidelines, Danielle Carter made her long-awaited return from injury on Thursday night as we ran out 4-0 winners over Bristol City.

It was an emotional moment as the 25-year-old stepped back out onto the pitch for the first time since May 2018 - and she almost made a dream return when striking the crossbar with a stunning strike from 25 yards.

We spoke to Carter after making her first appearance of the season - and this is what she said.

on returning from injury…

It was an emotional moment and I’m getting emotional now! Words really can’t describe it. It feels incredible and the reception I got was just something else. Ah, I can’t explain it!

on hitting the crossbar with her first shot at goal…

If that went in then that would have been the cherry on top, but I’m just so happy to get back out there. All I want to do now is help the team over the last five games that we’ve got left.

on the support that she’s received behind the scenes…

The support has been incredible and I can’t thank the medical team enough. Sam, Rose and Fran have helped me the most. I’ve spent a lot of time with those three so I’m so thankful for all of their help.

on her goals between now and the end of the season…

I just want to get more minutes, build up my confidence and help the team to bring home the WSL trophy!
