Quinn - We dug deep and pulled through

Quinn and Arsenal Women

Louise Quinn contributed at both ends of the field in our 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday

The Republic of Ireland international got us off to a flying start when she opened the scoring inside five minutes, before withstanding some late pressure from the Toffees to secure all three points.

We spoke to Quinn after the final whistle - and this is what she said:

on the importance of sealing all three points…

That was the most important thing. We made it difficult for ourselves in the second half after having good control in the first, but we dug deep and pulled through. We were a little slower on the ball and we just can’t afford to take those risks now. We need to put the game to bed earlier, but we picked up all three points and we’ll definitely learn from that performance. It won’t happen again.

on the psychological benefit of scoring an early goal…

It really does give you a boost! It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll take more chances, but it gives you more confidence and when you’re in control that can help you to play the killer pass. We just needed to control the game and play how we know we can play really. We’re so good at just bouncing the ball around, keeping possession and remaining patient. It settles your nerves and it can place the team in a different mindset too. Everton were getting a lot of set-pieces and corners too and that’s not something that we give away too lightly either, so we’re going to analyse this game and learn a lot from it.

on taking up a more direct approach…

We have versatility throughout the squad and I think those balls in-behind were working for us. Sometimes you’ve got to play what you see and that’s exactly what Joe wants from us. He wants us to be versatile and obviously when you’ve got players who are brilliant in one on one situations, you’re always a threat when you get in behind. To put a ball in-behind any defence, as I know, is tough to deal with because you’ve got to make your decision quickly and deal with it quickly.

on Montemurro’s versatility…

Joe thinks about everything every week. As soon as he sees their formation he knows exactly what we have to do, even if that means just shifting one player along. The information he’s given us is all there so then it’s just a case of us executing it. He’s pretty much spot on every time.
