Flaherty - We’re targeting clean sweep

Gilly Flaherty says Arsenal Ladies want to emulate the team of 2007 and win a clean sweep of trophies this season.

The Ladies missed out on the quadruple last year after being knocked out of the FA Cup and the Women’s Champions League at the semi-final stage.

"Every year, every team always wants to beat us and stop us from winning trophies. We always have to prove that we’re better than the season before"

A Women’s Super League and Continental Cup double, plus progression in Europe, ensured 2012 ended successfully, but Flaherty feels last season could have yielded even more.

“I only switched the FA Cup final on to watch the penalties, because my best friend was in goal for Birmingham,” she told Arsenal.com. “I didn’t want to know anything about it because we should have been there.

“We knew we were good enough and it was disappointing because we felt we’d let ourselves down. Our aim is to win everything we play in.

“I was devastated when we lost against Chelsea in the semi-final. The way I felt after that game will haunt me for a long time. We didn’t want to feel it again. Hopefully it can spur us on this year to remember what we felt against Chelsea, and know that we want to get our cup back where it belongs.

“Every year, every team always wants to beat us and stop us from winning trophies. We always have to prove that we’re better than the season before.

“Every team gets stronger and we have to keep making sure that we’re moving forward too. Other teams have strengthened. We’ve managed to keep our unit together and it’s now even harder for us to win things.

“We have to keep pushing forward. We all want to win and that’s why we’re at Arsenal. We’re aiming for the quadruple like we do every year.”
