‘What I learnt from my spell at Basel’

Having spent three years at Basel, it is only natural that Mohamed Elneny is looking forward to facing his former side on Wednesday night.

The Egypt international spent three years at the Swiss club after leaving his homeland, and says it was absolutely vital to his development.

“I didn’t have a lot of experience before I moved to Basel,” Elneny told Arsenal Player. “I learned a lot and gained plenty of experience playing for them in both the Champions League and Europa League.

"I was there for three years and also learned how to be more punctual both on and off the pitch, and not to fear any opponent we face"

“I was there for three years and also learned how to be more punctual both on and off the pitch, and not to fear any opponent we face. I liked the club and enjoyed my time there.

“I have good memories of my time playing for them. It will be a good opportunity to see everyone again and the fans, who I have a very good relationship with.”

Elneny could come up against fellow Egypt international Omar Gaber on Wednesday night, and the Arsenal midfielder says they have a close relationship.

“Omar is like a brother to me, ever since we played together for the Egyptian youth team,” he said.

“He’s a very talented player and I’m sure he’s going to enjoy his experience over there and will become a successful player for them.

“I told him when he moved there that he will like it at Basel and the people will support him. He’s a good player and I wish him all the best.”
