Arsene Wenger was asked about the possibility of a breakaway league involving the world’s top clubs on Friday. Read on for what he had to say:
on the breakaway league rumours…
There was an initiative to diminish the advantage of the English clubs with extended money they get from TV deals. This is basically the result that comes out because the English clubs negotiate and fight to get back as much as possible and keep everyone together. What is important is that you don’t want to go into [the situation in] boxing where you have five federations and five different ways of acting and you don’t know anymore who is a real world champion. It is important that we stay unified and play football with the same rules. Especially if you look in the future it is quite complicated and it is important that we keep the whole thing together.

on whether it is a real possibility…
It is a real danger because if tomorrow you have 10 South American or 10 Chinese who own 10 of the English clubs, they can say, ‘Let’s make a league and play some games on our continent’ and all get together if they buy in different countries. It is a danger. That is why I believe and would fight that Uefa keeps control and that Fifa keeps control of the whole system.
