Robert Pires says raising money for The Arsenal Foundation was always the “first objective” of the legends match against Milan Glorie.
Saturday’s exhibition at Emirates Stadium raised £1m to build pitches in England, Somalia and Jordan, and the Arsenal Foundation ambassador says it’s important for former stars to help those less fortunate.
“It was the first objective,” Pires told Arsenal.com. “We play for the Arsenal Foundation, so the most important thing was to raise a lot of money for this foundation because they want to build some pitches in other countries.
“We are retired so the most important thing is, if you can, to help the people - especially the children. That’s why we played. I thank the fans for coming in and I thank the Milan Glorie players because it was not easy with the way they work. It was a great event for Arsenal and especially the fans. I’m very happy."
