Per - Cech has a calm influence

Per Mertesacker and Petr Cech

Per Mertesacker believes Petr Cech’s experience has a calming influence on the Arsenal squad.

The Czech Republic international arrived from Chelsea in the summer and is one clean sheet away from equaling David James’ record of 169 Premier League shutouts.

Mertesacker praised Cech’s fine form on the pitch but revealed the goalkeeper has also had a positive impact behind the scenes this season.

“First of all, he is a great goalkeeper and an experienced one,” the World Cup winner said. “He gives on one hand, good performances, reliability and has saved us a few times this season already by keeping clean sheets and disallowing goals.

"So first of all, in his job, he wants to do it every single day. He is experienced, has got a voice, players listen to him and even goalkeepers do. He gives everyone a lift and that is what we need.

"He has won the lot, especially the Champions League and the Premier League, which not a lot us have done yet. That is something he gives us and that extra belief can help us be consistent through out the season which is something we have failed to do over the last couple of years.

“On a daily basis he speaks to individuals on the training pitch. He is not someone who rushes any decision or meetings, I think he has a very calm influence which is why he is so respected in that group and he brings his experience in a smooth way, that is what I like.”
