Wenger - FA Cup is so unpredictable

Arsene Wenger says the weekend's shock results in the FA Cup prove the competition’s unpredictability.

Chelsea and Manchester City were knocked out at home by lower-league opposition, while Manchester United were held to a draw by League Two side Cambridge United.

Arsenal had to work hard for a place in the fifth round, earning a 3-2 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

"It was a typical English cup tie because we had to fight until the end, but I’m happy with our performance"

“It was a typical English cup tie because we had to fight until the end, but I’m happy with our performance,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “Of course, there’s a bit of you that’s not over the moon because you conceded two goals but they only had two shots on target and for a big part of the game we played very well.

“[When I saw Saturday’s results] I checked twice because I thought, ‘is that on penalties or what?’. I couldn’t believe it, it was such a surprise because all these teams played at home and that makes the surprise even bigger.”

Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott both scored at Amex Stadium, and Wenger believes having the pair back fit gives Arsenal another dimension in attack.

“You could say that going forward, Theo and Mesut - who have only just come back - give something to the squad as well.

“It’s good for us after this weekend to think we have won at Manchester City and won away again at Brighton. Not many teams come here and win in such a convincing way.

“I believe that the momentum is there, maybe not long enough but we can strengthen it week in, week out by showing this kind of performance.”
