Joel Campbell played 66 minutes as Costa Rica were knocked out of the World Cup on penalties by the Netherlands in their quarter final.
The Arsenal forward was a lively presence during the first half, with one fine reverse pass creating a half chance for the central Americans.
However, in a closely-contested match of few clear-cut chances Campbell could not find a way to punish a Netherlands side who spent much of their time on the front foot.
Just after the hour mark, the 22-year-old was replaced by Marco Urena.
After a tense finish, and thrilling extra-time period, the game went to penalties, with substitute Tim Krul saving two as the Netherlands progressed to the semi finals where they will face Argentina.
