Interview

Mead on 'hesitant' attacking performance

Despite creating plenty of promising attacking opportunities on Sunday, our Adobe Women's FA came to an end as we were defeated 1-0 by Manchester City.

Speaking after the game, Beth Mead spoke honestly about our display and the need for more decisiveness in the final third.

"I think we were just a little bit hesitant, myself included," said our England international. "We tried to play balls when it maybe wasn’t on and when I should have, so that was a little bit frustrating for the calibre of players we’ve got. I would expect myself to make better decisions. We didn’t make the correct decision in the right moments today and we didn’t score the goals that we probably should have.

"I think it was a game of two halves. We weren’t good on the ball in the first half for an Arsenal team, but I thought we defended really well and didn’t give them any chances, which is always good against a team like City.

"We created a lot of chances in the second half. Unfortunately, the keeper had a world-class day today and made some unbelievable saves and I’m a bit disappointed we conceded from a set piece, but set pieces can win you games, so yeah, I'm very frustrated with the overall result."

Our No 9 is already looking forward, though, with two big games coming up against London City Lionesses and Manchester United.

"It’s not nice to lose, but sometimes you can learn a lot more. We’ve got to learn and build. I think there’s some positives to take from the performance. We put in a lot of work this week and gave City respect in the way that we prepared and it didn’t come off on the pitch, which is obviously always frustrating.

"But we will go back, learn and look at what wasn’t quite right and what we can work on better and hopefully we can improve from there."
