‘The little nutmeg, we call that a little chilli!’

After a tight first half, we upped the ante after the interval and ran out convincing 4-0 winners against Newcastle on Sunday.

Bukayo Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang led the charge and afterwards they faced the media.

This is what they said:

Saka on the change in the second half…

I feel like we just tried to bring energy to the game and in the first half we were all a bit slow and they were defending really deep and really well. They were compact and we struggled to get through, but in the second half I don’t feel like they could match our energy, we just kept going, playing and combining and they just couldn’t handle us.

Aubameyang on Mikel’s changes at half-time…

He just said to keep going and I think we started not at our best but then in the second half we used more energy and went through and we scored the first goal.

Aubameyang on his opening goal…

We spoke at half-time and the coach told me to stay as a second striker so I kept my position and I knew to head it, and in this action I’m ready to take the ball and score. We’ve been practicing this week.

Aubameyang on the tactical change…

We needed it because they were playing really deep and very compact so it was good for us to have me in the middle to give more space for Bukayo.

Saka on his assist for the second goal…

I just thought that as soon as I passed it to him I found the space and I exploited it and it was almost a two v one situation but I always see it as a one v one. Then next a little nutmeg, we call that a little chilli. I sort of looked towards Eddie first because I like to cross it behind the defence but I saw that it was quite tight and the cut back was on so I put it through the gap, and it was a good finish from Pepe.

Aubameyang on the environment under Mikel…

Yeah it’s changed. We feel better, we have an idea of playing and it’s very clear so we try to maintain this level. We’re happy to keep going like this.
