Jonas Eidevall was disappointed with our display in Friday night’s 3-1 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea scored all three of their goals in the first half and, despite an improved second-half showing and a goal from Kim Little, we were unable to close the gap on the Barclays Women’s Super League leaders.
“It’s a poor performance from us, we didn’t reach our standards,” Jonas told Arsenal.com after the game. “We played against a Chelsea side that’s clearly set out to counter attack and we let them do that too many times in the first half and they’re very effective on those occasions and that creates a very difficult journey for us today.
“It was [an improved second half] but I still think when we look at it there are things there as well where we need to get especially our execution a little bit better in order to pose a real threat. I think we played into a lot of situations in front of their defending line but were not punishing them enough in those moments.”
Despite the result, the travelling Gooners were in full voice throughout the match, taking up an entire stand behind one of the goals at Stamford Bridge, contributing to an overall capacity just shy of 33,000.
“They were incredible, they were supportive, they were loud, they were encouraging and that obviously hurts a lot that we can’t reward them with a better performance,” Jonas added.
“We have to learn, we have to look forwards, onward and upwards but we also need to look inside and see ‘why don’t we perform better today?’ We need to learn from that and we need to rectify that next weekend.”
