Interview

Eidevall: "I'm almost lost for words"

Jonas Eidevall was nearly rendered speechless by our Gunners' comeback on Sunday as we pulled off a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Women's Super League.

In our final game before the April international break, we overturned an early City lead through goals from Frida Maanum and Katie McCabe in a dramatic afternoon at Meadow Park.

"I told our players I'm almost lost for words for how they handled adversity and challenges during this block [of games]," said Eidevall. "It was great turning this game around - it's a great result."

After a lethargic first-half performance that could have seen the visitors several goals in front, our Gunners came out firing for the final 45 minutes. We shrugged off tired legs from a relentless March playing schedule to achieve victory over title rivals City.

"One of our values is to be 100%. No matter the situation, we never give up. We always do our best. We always believe we can get better. And that's easy to put on a piece of paper. Then life gets in the way and throws you situations. I'm so proud of us being there still."

Player of the Match Katie McCabe was vital to the game's turnaround and Eidevall was full of praise for the Irish captain's perseverance and spirit.

"Starting inside Emirates Stadium after the game against Bayern Munich when she's sitting in a boot and we think she might be out for a long time and it doesn't look that great. And we go for scans and we see there is a possibility and we have a mentality monster like Katie who's going "I'm gonna play Sunday".

"You start laughing about it, but then you understand that it might be a possibility and then that turns into reality. And then that turns into this performance today. She has been very impressive here this block. One of our best players.

"I think she's been versatile. She's been playing to her strengths. She's been a True Gunner in this block and it was an excellent performance."

As we reached the end of a month that saw us reach a Champions League semi-final and lift the Conti Cup, Eidevall spoke about his belief that "we can beat any team on any given day". Today's result only gave credence to that.

"That's the potential we have. We still need to work incredibly hard every game with our preparation and execution in order to do that."
