‘I wouldn’t want to be competing in midfield!’

Emma Mitchell

Emma Mitchell is glad that she isn’t a midfielder.

The Scotland international is currently facing tough competition from Katie McCabe at left back, but doesn’t envy the depth of talent that we have in the middle of the park.

Dominique Bloodworth, Danielle van de Donk, Kim Little and the returning Jordan Nobbs and Viki Schnaderbeck can all play there, while Lia Walti impressed on her first start for the club against Juventus on Sunday.

“Lia’s quality,” she told Arsenal.com. “She’s so good on the ball and really gives us that balance in midfield that allows Kim and Viv to play higher up the park, but I think she’s going to play a massive role in this team this year. For her to come here on her first game and show the fans what she’s all about is brilliant and I’m really happy for her.

“We’ve got Jordan to come back too, so the midfield this year is really strong. I’m glad I’m a left back to be honest because I wouldn’t want to be competing for a place in that position, but I think it just shows you the quality and competitiveness that we’ve got.

“Danielle was voted as our player of the year last year too and her quality showed through once again. If she plays that well again then we’re going to have a brilliant year.

“That game was also potentially the best game that Vivianne’s played in an Arsenal shirt,” Mitchell added. “She showed that if you give her a half chance then she’s probably going to finish it. Having someone like Viv in your team you know that whenever your backs are against the wall, anything can still happen with her quality.”
