Emery on the performance and team pressing

Unai Emery may have seen his side beat his former club Paris Saint-Germain 5-1 in Singapore on Saturday, but he still feels there is room to improve.

Afterwards our head coach spoke to the media, and discussed a range of subjects. This is what he said:

on how encouraging the performance was…

For me, it doesn’t change my idea of the team. We still need to improve tactically and improve the pace of every player. We didn’t have any injuries which was important, and we had the opportunity to play more young players too. The result wasn’t the most important thing today. For me, it’s also about playing with the young players and missing some important players.

on why they couldn’t press and whether it was the heat…

No, no. It’s the first match for Mesut, Eleny and Iwobi. Tactically, we’ve been working all week in training and watching movies. The first idea we are working on is without the ball and the right place to be pressing. I am happy with how the players played for the first time for these three players.

on how close he is to naming five captains…

I am giving you and am giving the players this position but not close. Like I am telling you, one is Koscielny but he’s injured. Then I am thinking of five more captains. I am thinking about Petr, Aaron and Mesut. Then I need to find one or two more.
