Eidevall: Leah Williamson is 'close' to returning

Leah Williamson smiles in training

After nine months on the sidelines with an ACL injury, Leah Williamson is drawing ever closer to a return to the pitch.

"She's close. She's returned to full training," said Jonas Eidevall at Friday's pre-Everton press conference.

When asked whether the Lionesses captain could be in action as early as the weekend, our coach tempered expectations.

"Tomorrow will be a little bit too soon, but after that, I definitely think she's in contention to be in matchday squads. Potentially in the next weekend's fixture."

Our number six isn't the only defender who's progressing well when it comes to injury recovery. Right-back Laura Wienroither, who suffered the same ACL rupture in our Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg, is also set to return to the squad in the coming months.

"With a player like Leah returning from injury and potentially Laura Wienroither as well coming in here in the spring, being able to return fully to play, that puts us in a very good situation. We have a good balance in the squad."

In more immediate team news, Eidevall confirmed that Steph Catley has returned to the squad after missing last weekend's FA Cup tie against Watford.

"It's looking good. There's not been much change since the game we had against Watford. Steph Catley has returned so that's an addition and other than that, there hasn't been much change."
