Under-23s: Arsenal v Swansea - The Brief

Under-23s celebrate Tyreece John-Jules' goal

Our under-23s are back in Premier League 2 action on Friday night, as they prepare to face Swansea City at Emirates Stadium.

The story so far

We come into this fixture in high spirits, having booked our place in the final of the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday night. We ran out 5-4 winners on penalties following a 2-2 draw, meaning we’ve now scored 26 goals in our last ten fixtures.

During our last two league outings we picked up a much-deserved 3-1 win over Chelsea, on top of a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Liverpool, who currently sit in third place.

As things stand we’re joint-top of the Premier League 2 table with Leicester City, having recorded 36 points from 20 games.

With two games still to play and third and fourth just two points behind us, the race for the title is guaranteed to go down to the wire.

The opposition

Swansea are another side enjoying a strong season, having lost just one of their last 11 fixtures in all competitions.

The Swans are currently fourth in the table, with 34 points from their 20 matches to date.

In their last league outing they beat Manchester United 2-0.

One to watch

Tyreece John-Jules has been in fine form for club and country this season.

The 17-year-old striker has scored six goals in ten appearances for our under-18s, prompting Steve Gatting to promote the teenager to his under-23 squad.

Tyreece John-Jules

He’s since recorded four goals in seven appearances, averaging a goal every 124 minutes since the start of the season.

He even found his way onto the scoresheet against the Netherlands during his first start for England Under-17s.

Last time we met

It was a tightly-contested battle the last time these two sides clashed, but it was Swansea who came out on top with a 3-1 win.

The Swans took an early lead through George Byers, before Charlie Gilmour levelled from the penalty spot in the 64th minute. Both sides continued to push for a winner until the end, but two goals in the final five minutes secured all three points for the Welsh outfit.
