Brazil youth international forward Marquinhos announced himself by scoring a fine goal on his debut in a 2-1 win over FC Zurich in our opening Europa League match of the 2022/23 campaign, having arrived in north London from Sao Paulo the previous summer.

The forward, who boasts electric pace, an array of tricks and fierce left foot, made his Premier League debut off the bench in the Gunners’ next match, a 3-0 win at Brentford, and featured six times in all competitions before joining Championship side Norwich City on loan at the end of January. He went on to make 11 appearances for the Canaries, scoring one goal.

Before arriving in England he had just one year’s experience with his hometown club, having made his senior debut soon after his 18th birthday, but he helped them win the Sao Paulo State Championship in 2021 as interest grew from Europe’s biggest clubs.

Marquinhos – full name Marcus Vinicius Oliveira Alencar – has been capped by his country at under-16 and under-17 levels, and he was a regular for Brazil at this summer’s Under-20 World Cup, scoring and assisting in a 2-0 win over Nigeria as the Selecao reached the quarter-finals.

This season, he spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Nantes in Ligue 1 before agreeing a switch to Brazilian side Fluminense on loan until January 2025.
