William Spittle

William Spittle joined Arsenal as an amateur in August 1912 before signing professional forms a month later.

The inside forward made his senior debut against Manchester City in November that year and made a total of seven first-team appearances over a seven-year period.

Southfields-born Spittle did not make a senior appearance for five years after featuring for the final time in a 5-2 defeat to Lincoln in February 1914.

That was due to the outbreak of the First World War, where Spittle served as a Lance-Corporal in the 17th Middlesex Regiment. He made 27 wartime appearances for Arsenal before transferring to Leicester City for £300 in October 1919.
