Tommy Shanks

Tommy Shanks was a key figure as Woolwich Arsenal reached the First Division for the first time in the 1903/04 campaign.

The Irishman, signed by Harry Bradshaw, finished as the team's top goalscorer that season with 25 goals.

Woolwich Arsenal did not lose a single game at the Manor Ground that season. But for draws against Burslem Port Vale and champions Preston, their home record would have been perfect. In the end, their final goal tally was incredible: 91 for and just 22 against.

Shanks played his part in that historic campaign and won two full caps for the Republic of Ireland during his short spell with the Club.

Financial concerns saw Arsenal lose their star striker to his former club Brentford in May 1904. Shanks went on to help Leicester Fosse achieve promotion to the First Division for the first time, before featuring for Leyton and Clapton Orient.
