Tommy Briercliffe

Tommy Briercliffe was part of Arsenal's free-scoring forward line of the early 20th century.

The Lancashire-born outside right joined from Stalybridge Rovers in May 1901 and scored three times in his first four games, including a brace in a 4-0 win over Burnley in September 1901.

Briercliffe netted 11 times in 34 appearances in his first season, making him Arsenal's top goalscorer in the Second Division that year.

He added another eight goals in 33 matches the following campaign before playing a key role as the Gunners were promoted to the First Division in 1903/04, weighing in with another 10 strikes.

Briercliffe appeared regularly in Arsenal's first-ever season in the top flight but transferred to Plymouth Argyle towards the end of the campaign in April 1905.

He later played for Brentford and Darwen.
