In his first year at Arsenal Stefan Malz scored twice in 11 appearances, including a goal on his debut against Preston North End.
But the following season he featured just three times as a substitute.
Stefan had arrived from 1860 Munich in the summer of 1999 for a fee of £650,000 but in two seasons failed to impose himself on a midfield which already boasted the talents of Parlour, Vieira, Petit and Ljungberg.
The highlights of his time at Highbury were goals against Preston and Newcastle, both in his first season in North London.
He was also in the squad as the Gunners suffered a 4-1 penalty shoot-out defeat to Galatasaray in the UEFA Cup Final in Copenhagen in May 2000. However, the German midfielder did not come off the bench.
In summer 2001 he returned to his homeland to play for Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga.
