Lionel Smith

Lionel Smith joined Arsenal just before the outbreak of the Second World War.

The left back arrived in north London as an amateur from Denaby United in April 1939 before signing professional terms four months later.

Smith served in the Army during the war and, in addition, made 17 appearances for Arsenal during that period.

The defender made 181 appearances for the Club after holding down a regular place from the 1948/49 season onwards.

He was part of the side that won the 1952/53 First Division title as well as starting in the 1952 FA Cup final as Arsenal went down 1-0 to Newcastle at Wembley.

Smith moved to Watford in June 1954 before becoming player-manager at Gravesend & Northfleet.
