Johnny MacLeod

Scotland international Johnny Macleod joined the Club for £40,000 – then a record fee for a winger – in 1961 and quickly established himself in the side.

Manager Billy Wright preferred to play with just one winger, but despite this policy Macleod went on to play 112 times for Arsenal, contributing 28 goals over three seasons.

Macleod had the honour of scoring the Gunners’ first-ever goal in Europe, when they beat Staevnet in September 1963 in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

The Scot eventually moved on to Aston Villa in 1964.
