John Coleman

John ‘Tim’ Coleman was part of the side which fired Woolwich Arsenal to promotion in the 1903/04 season.

The inside/centre forward joined from Northampton Town alongside Everard Lawrence in May 1902 and quickly became a force to be reckoned with.

Coleman was Arsenal's top goalscorer in his first season at the Club but bettered his 17 goals the following campaign with 23 in 28 matches after striking up a prolific partnership with Tommy Shanks.

The duo played a key role in helping the Gunners secure promotion to the First Division but, like the team, Coleman struggled with life at the top initially.

He bounced back strongly with 15 goals in 1905/06 as Arsenal reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Newcastle United in Stoke. His form attracted international attention and the striker made his solitary appearance for England against Ireland in February 1907.

Woolwich Arsenal were suffering from financial problems, however, and were forced to accept a bid of £700 for Coleman from Everton in February 1908. He left with a goalscoring record of 84 in 196 starts.

Coleman later played for Sunderland, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Tunbridge Wells Rangers.
