Joe Powell was bought out of the Army to play professional football for Arsenal.
The right back joined in December 1892 after six seasons in the Staffordshire Regiment and enjoyed a four-year career with the Club - including a spell as captain.
He made his debut in a 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Sunderland in January 1983, the first of 92 starts in Arsenal colours.
But Powell's Arsenal tenure was to end in tragedy.
In the defender's final match for the Club against Kettering in November 1896, he broke his arm and contracted blood poisoning and tetanus.
Although his arm was amputated Powell died six days later at home in Plumstead.
