Jim Fotheringham

Scottish centre half Jim Fotheringham contested a first-team slot with Bill Dodgin while at Arsenal.

Signing professional at Highbury in March 1951, he represented the Army during National Service and was given his league debut in the Gunners' 2-2 draw at Bolton in November 1954.

He featured prominently as Arsenal finished fifth in the top flight in 1955/56 and played 72 First Division games before being sold to Hearts for £10,000 in March 1959.

Reuniting with Dave Bowen at Northampton Town in September 1959, his career was ended by injury soon afterwards. He died aged 43 in Kettering in September 1977. (With thanks to Leigh Edwards)
