George Wood

George Wood will best be remembered for keeping Arsenal legend Pat Jennings out of the side for virtually the whole of 1982.

The Scottish goalkeeper, who joined the Club from Everton in August 1980, made a total of 133 appearances during a three-year spell at Highbury.

Signed as a possible replacement for Jennings, Wood played 11 league games as second-choice keeper in his first season but deputised for the injured Irishman in January 1982 and, such was the quality of his performances, remained No 1 until December.

During that time, he was selected in the Scotland squad for the 1982 World Cup.

Jennings regained his place at the end of that year and Wood joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer in 1983.
