George Grant

George Grant took part in the first ever league game played at Highbury.

The half back was a regular for Woolwich Arsenal leading up to World War One and was also part of the side that suffered relegation for the only time in the Club’s history.

Grant joined as an amateur from Dartford in March 1910 and, after spending his first two seasons in reserve and junior football, played 12 of the last 13 games of the 1912/13 season. Unfortunately he could not stop the Club from being relegated.

During the next season, on September 6, 1913, Grant played against Leicester Fosse in the first game at Highbury and in the two years leading up to the outbreak of the war was the Club’s regular right half.

He made 57 appearances during nine years at Woolwich Arsenal before leaving to play for Millwall and then QPR.
