George Cox is better known for his career in first-class cricket.
The son of a successful former Sussex cricketer, George Jr played seven times for Arsenal after joining as an amateur in November 1933. He signed professional one month later and made his league debut against Leicester City in March 1934.
Cox scored once in two-and-a-half years at Highbury, playing predominantly in the Football Combination where he netted 53 times in 75 matches.
He took up cricket with Sussex in 1931 and enjoyed a distinguished career, playing 455 matches, scoring 22,949 runs (average 32.92), hitting 50 centuries and registering a highest score of 234 not out.
Cox transferred to Fulham for £150 in May 1936 and later appeared for Luton Town. He also played cricket for Winchester and coached Sussex from 1960 to 1964.
