Colin Pates

Colin Pates joined Arsenal from Charlton Athletic for £500,000 in January 1990.

The defender, a former England youth international, made his name as club captain at Chelsea throughout the 1980s before his departure to The Valley.

Pates made his Gunners debut in a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in February 1990 - the first of 16 starts for the Club.

He scored a European Cup goal against Benfica at Highbury but struggled to keep his place in the first team under George Graham, playing 25 times in two-and-a-half years at Highbury.

Pates enjoyed a successful loan spell at Brighton and Hove Albion in the 1990/91 season, and that move was eventually made permanent. He later played for Crawley Town and Romford.
