Chris Whyte never realised his glowing early potential at Arsenal.
After making his debut at the tender age of 20 in 1981, the tall central defender caught the eye alongside David O’Leary and seemed destined for big things with both club and country.
Comfortable with the ball at his feet and a capable passer, Whyte missed just six games and helped Arsenal to FA Cup and League Cup Semi-Finals in 1982/83.
But the England Under-21 international lost form and confidence the following season and the emergence of a certain Tony Adams moved him down the pecking order.
At just 24, he left Arsenal for America after being given a free transfer in 1986.
He later moved to West Brom and Leeds, where he won a league title medal in 1992.
