Charles Barley, or John Charles Barley to give him his full name, played 10 games in three seasons at Highbury in the late 1920s.
Derbyshire-born, Barley could play at wing-half or inside-forward and he joined Arsenal in October 1925 - becoming one of the great Herbert Chapman's first signings.
But the versatile forward rarely got a sniff of the first team as other more illustrious names kept him on the fringes.
Barley made his competitive debut for Arsenal in a League game against Leeds in February 1927. He made four appearances that season - including one in the FA Cup - and scored in his third match, a 3-2 win at Aston Villa.
But Barley could not press on, making just two appearances in 1927/28 and four the following campaign. He eventually moved to Reading in May 1929.
Arsenal stayed very much in the Barley family, however. Charles' son, Derek, played for Arsenal Reserves and junior sides in the early 1950s.
