Welsh international inside-forward Bryn Jones played for Arsenal either side of the Second World War.
He moved to Highbury from Wolves for a then record £14,000 in August 1938 after catching the eye of George Allison.
He seemed an ideal successor to Alex James after the Scot’s retirement and scored three times in his first four matches, including a goal on his debut against Portsmouth. But the goals dried up after that and, before Jones could put things right, Europe was at war.
Jones served in the Royal Artillery during the conflict and when competitive football resumed he was 34.
He played a part in Arsenal’s 1947/48 title-winning season but, with only seven appearances, Jones missed out on a medal.
The Welshman went on to play 17 times for Wales and ended his Arsenal career with eight goals in 76 games.
He moved to Norwich in June 1949 but returned to North London after his playing days to open a shop near Highbury.
