Former Rangers and West Ham wing half Archie Macaulay signed for Arsenal in July 1947 from Brentford and immediately slotted into new manager Tom Whittaker’s side.
Macaulay had won wartime international honours with Scotland during his time at West Ham while serving in the Army Physical Training Corps, and he made his official Scotland debut in April 1947 against England.
Macaulay won the league title in his first season with the Gunners, and was selected for Great Britain as they faced the Rest of Europe. He was part of the team that won the Charity Shield the following season, but Arsenal could not retain their title and finished in fifth spot.
The Scot was a near ever-present in Whittaker’s team throughout his time with the Club but he missed out on the 1950 FA Cup triumph after the manager opted for Alex Forbes ahead of Macaulay in the final.
Macaulay signed for Fulham that summer for £10,000 after making 108 appearances for Arsenal, scoring one goal.
