Celebrating Earth Day

Sustainability Earth Day

April 22 is Earth Day. This day, more than any other, gives us an opportunity to stop for a moment and reflect on the planet we call home, and consider its future in our hands.

As a global, annual event, Earth Day has long been an important part of the calendar for those who want to try to make changes to their lifestyle and have a positive impact upon our planet.

One easy yet impactful action we can all take is to consider what we eat and where it comes from. The production and transportation of food is responsible for 33 per cent of global carbon emissions, so our choices can make a huge impact.

To help supporters make food choices easier, we are excited to trial a new way to provide information on the emissions related to our menus across Emirates Stadium. After working closely with My Emissions, we have teamed up with Delaware North, our catering partner, and are now able to calculate and illustrate the carbon emissions connected to all of our food. The result of these calculations will be shown with a simple “traffic light” colour scheme, allowing a quick assessment of the food we offer.

The system that we have used with My Emissions considers emissions associated with farming, including the use of the land, feed and fertilisers, the processing of the ingredients, packaging, and transportation. My Emissions are constantly looking to improve the data that is being used in the calculations, so we will be able to ensure the information we pass on is as accurate as possible.

As well as the introduction of the food emissions labelling, you will hopefully have been enjoying the work that we have been doing to try to reduce our environmental impact. For example, this year we have:

•Installed more water dispensers at the Arsenal Academy.

•Finalised plans to replace our old lights at Emirates Stadium.

•Ordered new bins to help with our waste management.

•Continued to work with our Academy players to educate them on climate change.

•Maintained our thriving beehives at Sohba Realty Training Centre – where we will soon be welcoming our thousands of wildflowers for them to pollinate very soon!
