'I opened my heart to learn the Arsenal way'

Edu and Gilberto embrace

Moving to a new club always requires a degree of acclimatisation, but moving continents in order to do so can significantly prolong the period of adaption.

When Gilberto signed for us from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro in 2003, he was faced with no shortage of challenges. But thanks to the help of compatriot Edu, plus his own drive and determination, the World Cup winner was soon right at home in north London.

Tickets are still available for Arsenal Legends' match against Real Madrid at the Emirates in September - secure yours HERE!

“When I arrived at the club for me it was something new and I knew that I was coming to a very good club with very good players,” Gilberto told Arsenal Player. “It was nice to arrive at the club and see Edu and have him at the club, knowing how the club works to help me.

“Edu’s role in my adaptation was very important because he as a Brazilian made it easy to explain things and help me as well. One thing that I have in my mind that was very clear was that I want to adapt, I want to fit into the team and I want to enjoy playing for a new club and I want to face a new challenge.

“Struggling with the language was quite hard but for me it was just another challenge that I had to face and get over it. But I opened my heart to learn.

“This was very important because it doesn’t matter what I had before, I came to the club as a World Cup winner, so maybe I could say I have nothing to learn here, but I opened my heart to learn the culture, learn the language, learn the process of the club, learn the way Arsenal and Arsène wanted me to play. This was the most important process.”

Robert Pires travelled to Madrid to make the announcement of this double header charity event and is expected to play alongside fellow Invincibles Freddie Ljungberg, Gilberto Silva, Ray Parlour, Sol Campbell and Lauren. Tomas Rosicky is also set to take part in both legs, together with a host of other star names.

The match in Spain will be played in aid of Real Madrid’s Foundation, with the return match being played in aid of The Arsenal Foundation.

Limpar - The story behind my move to Arsenal

It is exactly 28 years since we signed the original super Swede, Anders Limpar.

The winger made an instant impression, helping us win the 1990/91 title and becoming a firm fan favourite.

But how did the move come about?

"The story I’ve heard is that Mr George Graham wanted a goalie, a centre half and a winger, so he bought Seaman, Andy Linighan and me," Limpar told Arsenal Player.

"However, I didn’t know so much about English football. I saw a couple of games before my arrival and I thought the football was brutal. So hard with tackles flying in and everything and I thought, ‘How am I going to cope with this kind of hard football?’

"I came from Italy where it was, not better football, but more of a passing game. But after a couple of games, wherever I looked we had an unbelievable squad. Wherever I looked we had a natural player in each position so it was quite easy for me to just fit in and do my work which I was good at, running and taking people on and crosses.

"That was actually the last bit of the jigsaw and I think I won five or six trophies in four years with that team, so all credit to all the players involved and especially Nigel Winterburn, who made me look good.
"He did everything in his power to help me," Limpar added. "I can tell you now because it’s been many years, but George Graham wanted me to defend so much, but when the game started Nigel always told me, ‘Don’t worry about the defence, just go and attack and I’ll take care of the rest.'

"To have that full-back behind you is easy and I was like 99 per cent going forward and one per cent going back."
