Heading the way above our Premier League rivals

Gabriel scores against Crystal Palace

When it comes to one particular statistic in the Premier League this season, we are head and shoulders above any of our rivals - quite literally.

That is because we have netted 10 times from headers in the division so far, more than any side in the competition. To put that into context, in the whole of last season we netted 12 times using that method.

Goals scored from headers this season

Arsenal 10
Nottingham Forest 9
West Ham United 8
Wolves 7
Luton Town 7
Tottenham 7
Brighton 7

There have been some memorable headers too - who could forget Declan Rice’s last-gasp winner in the 4-3 win against Luton Town, or Kai Havertz snatching another late win at Brentford? Even our 1,000th goal at Emirates Stadium ended up being a header when Leandro Trossard stooped to bravely nod the ball over the line.

After our game against Crystal Palace, Gabriel joined Gabriel Jesus as one of two players to have registered more than one league goal using his head, meaning eight players have got on the scoresheet using their aerial prowess:

Our PL headed goals

Bukayo Saka Bournemouth (A)
Ben White Bournemouth (A)
Leandro Trossard Burnley (H)
William Saliba Burnley (H)
Kai Havertz Brentford (A)
Gabriel Jesus Luton (A)
Declan Rice Luton (A)
Gabriel Jesus Brighton (H)
Gabriel Liverpool (A)
Gabriel Crystal Palace (H)

With 21 games gone, we are currently on track to break our divisional record of headers scored in a season, which stands at 17 times in 2016/17, when Olivier Giroud netted six of them. The team in Premier League history with the most headers in a single campaign is Wimbledon, who bagged 22 in 1995/96.

Most headers we've scored in a season

2016/17 17
2007/08 14
2008/09 14
2015/16 13
2017/18 13
2002/03 13
2013/14 12
2022/23 12

For completeness, we’ve netted 294 headers since the Premier League was formed in 1992, putting us sixth in the all-time rankings. 21 of those have come against Everton who have been our biggest victims in that time, while Giroud has more than anyone else - in fact nearly twice as many as his nearest rival Ian Wright.

Our top header scorers

Olivier Giroud 27
Ian Wright 14
Emmanuel Adebayor 12
Tony Adams 9
Nicklas Bendtner 9
William Gallas 8
Laurent Koscielny 8

The player with the most in our current squad is Gabriel, whose goal against the Eagles puts him just outside this list on seven, while Jesus is one behind on six.
