Walti: "It wasn't good enough today"

Lia Walti provided an open and honest assessment of our 2-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday.

We went in at the break one goal to the good thanks to a header from Alessia Russo, but following the restart we conceded twice before the hour mark and then failed to make our late pressure count.

"I think it was just not good enough today," said Walti" I think we came here and knew it was going to be a difficult away game. I think we had a good first half, we created a lot and we didn’t allow them to have many chances but we couldn’t finish off the game in the first half. Then, in the second half we had 10/15 really bad minutes and we need to learn not to concede in these moments when we don't have the best momentum in the game. We lost another game this season with that and it’s very frustrating."

Walti then offered an explanation as to why we struggled to break down West Ham's deep block.

"It’s one of these games where you can’t really see where the spaces were. I think in the first half we created quick counter attacks when we won the ball in our half so I think in these moments we just need to be more clinical in front of the goal. I think in the second half, we need to train how to play against low blocks because a lot of teams play really low and it’s not easy to score goals against those opponents. But we need to train that, we need to cross the ball and we need to have a good box presence in the last third.

"I think sometimes we miss the pace of our passes to move the opponents and to maybe play the wide ball and then as well just have box presence. I think if we cross the ball in, we need to have a lot of players in the box and hope that we can score like that. But I think today we were just not pushing enough for that goal. Down the line we need to look at it and we need move on. Nothing lost yet but definitely not a good day for us."
