From the vault: 5 classic wins at Crystal Palace

Alexis Sanchez scores against Crystal Palace in 2017

We head across the river on Monday night for a trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace, and it's a trip that will bring back fond memories for a lot of Gooners who have enjoyed some fine wins in SE25.

Encounters between us and the Eagles have usually produced plenty of goals, and we have recorded some famous victories on their turf down the years as well as scoring some classic strikes.

We've delved through the archive to find five of the best for you to relive again before our first London derby of the campaign:

September 14, 1991

Crystal Palace 1-4 Arsenal

Kevin Campbell found himself involved in all four goals during a fine display by the 21-year-old attacker. He got the scoring started on 18 minutes when he saw a shot slip under Perry Sutcliffe to find the net, and then turned provider in the second half when his fine dribble and cross was powered home by the head of Alan Smith on 55 minutes.

Two minutes later Michael Thomas played a neat one-two with Campbell to add a third, with the striker completing his brace after some superb work by Paul Merson. Mark Bright’s late effort was a mere consolation for the Eagles.

February 25, 1995

Crystal Palace 0-3 Arsenal

Chris Kiwomya netted two of his three Gunners goals in this game to help seal victory against Palace in south London. He and Merson did the damage, with the midfielder netting the opening goal on 24 minutes after a cute John Jensen free-kick slipped him in.

Kiwomya bagged his first of the afternoon on 39 minutes when a little flick by Merson allowed him the chance to smash the ball past Nigel Martyn, and then 13 minutes from time more Merson magic saw the striker dink the ball over the goalkeeper to double his tally and create his Arsenal highlight.

December 28, 2017

Crystal Palace 2-3 Arsenal

Two goals from Alexis Sanchez in six second-half minutes ultimately saw us edge out Palace in this five-goal thriller, which was kickstarted when Shkodran Mustafi tucked in a saved Alexandre Lacazette attempt on 25 minutes, but Andros Townsend would equalise not long after the restart.

However that prompted Sanchez to shine, and he thrashed the ball home after a Lacazette knock-down on 62 minutes, before brilliantly collecting a Jack Wilshere pass and slipping the ball past Julian Speroni. James Tomkins’ header made for a nervy ending, but Arsene Wenger’s team held on.

May 19, 2021

Crystal Palace 1-3 Arsenal

Having been winless in five previous meetings with the Eagles, it looked as though that unwanted record was going to be extended after Christian Benteke cancelled out Nicolas Pepe’s opener and the game headed to a 1-1 conclusion.

However, a wonderful pass by Martin Odegaard allowed Gabriel Martinelli to scramble the ball home to put us in front in stoppage-time, before Pepe cut inside from the right flank to tuck home and ensure Mikel Arteta’s team snatched all the points.

August 5, 2022

Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal

We got last season off to the perfect start by winning at Selhurst Park under the Friday night lights to kick the Premier League campaign off. Just 20 minutes had elapsed when debutant Oleksandr Zinchenko nodded a corner towards Martinelli to head us into the lead, who made up for missing a golden chance earlier in the contest.

Some key saves from Aaron Ramsdale from Odsonne Edouard and Eberechi Eze would keep us in front, and they proved vital as the win was wrapped up five minutes from the end when Bukayo Saka’s dangerous cross was clipped into his own net by Marc Guehi to see us return across the capital with all three points.
