Pre-Match Report

U-23s: Arsenal v Liverpool - Preview

Reiss Nelson

THE STORY SO FAR

Our under-23s will bid to make it three wins from three when Liverpool visit Meadow Park on Friday night.

Steve Gatting's side come into the game off the back of high-scoring victories over both Derby County and Manchester City.

We’re currently second in the Premier League 2 table, level on points with table-topping Liverpool and two points ahead of third-placed Chelsea.

THE OPPOSITION

The Reds sit top of PL2 with six points from a possible six.

They are yet to concede this season, having beaten Swansea and Sunderland 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.

Matthew Virtue-Thick is their top scorer with two goals, with first-team forward Danny Ings having appeared in both games so far.

ONE TO WATCH

Reiss Nelson is currently the competition’s top scorer, having scored four times in the opening two games.

The 17-year-old midfielder inspired our fightback in the 3-2 win over Derby, before following it up with a dazzling display in our 4-3 win over Manchester City.

Reiss has provided consistent performances since stepping into Gatting’s side and has developed a reputation for being the team’s creative hub.

LAST TIME WE MET

We suffered a 3-2 defeat at Anfield when we last faced Liverpool back in December 2016.

Harry Wilson struck twice inside the opening quarter of an hour, punctuated by Stephy Mavididi’s fifth-minute equaliser.

Sheyi Ojo extended the lead for the hosts before Mavididi reduced the deficit 17 minutes from time.
