U21s preview: Peterborough United v Arsenal

Amario goal

Our Under-21s play their first knockout game of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy away to Peterborough United’s senior team on Tuesday night.

It’s a 7.30pm kick-off at Weston Homes Stadium in the competition’s Round of 32.

Previewing the Posh

It’s been a positive season for Peterborough so far, who are fifth in Sky Bet League One with 35 points from 19 games, seven points behind leaders Portsmouth.

Their last game was a 2-1 win at home to Doncaster Rovers in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.

In the Bristol Street Motors Trophy group stage, they won 2-0 at home to Cambridge United, won 3-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s, and lost 1-0 away to Colchester United to finish top of Group L with six points.

Poku

Kwame Poku has seven goals and seven assists for the Posh this season, while Ephron Mason-Clark also has seven goals.

Speaking to Peterborough’s website, manager Darren Ferguson said about us: “They’ve played a few first team players, so whether they do that again I’m not sure.

“They haven’t actually played for a while since the Reading game on the 14th because the game on Friday was cancelled, so we’ve had a good look at them and prepared as we normally would. They’re a very good team technically and have got a lot of pace.

“They play very similar to how Tottenham play, in possession in particular. Out of possession they’re quite aggressive, so it is quite a similar thing we’re looking at and you could probably say that about most under-21s team so we’ve got to be wary of that.”

Our tournament so far

As for us, we finished second in Group O with five points following a 2-2 draw away to Swindon Town (which we won 5-4 on penalties), a 5-0 win away to Exeter City, and a 5-2 defeat away to Reading (which first team players Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira were involved in).

That was the last outing for our U21s, who had a Premier League 2 game with West Brom postponed.

Amario celeb

Amario Cozier-Duberry and Khayon Edwards are the joint top scorers with five goals each for the U21s this season, while Charles Sagoe Jr leads the way for assists with five.

Our U21s previously lost to Peterborough in the Leasing.com Trophy in October 2019.
