U-23s: Sunderland v Arsenal - The Brief

THE STORY SO FAR

Our under-23s are back in Premier League 2 action on Sunday, as they travel to Sunderland hoping to continue their fine run of form.

Steve Gatting’s side head into the match off the back of two highly-impressive performances against Manchester United and Bayern Munich, scoring nine goals in the process.

We will be keen to close the gap between ourselves and league leaders Liverpool, who we trail by four points.

THE OPPOSITION

Sat in 10th place, Sunderland have endured a tough season, having picked up just three wins from 15 league games so far.

In their previous fixture, the Black Cats were beaten 5-0 by Chelsea, but have picked up most of their points at home.

ONE TO WATCH

Although an under-23 regular, Emile Smith Rowe has taken considerable steps forward this season as he looks to make the transition from the under-18s.

The England Under-17 World Cup winner has featured seven times under Gatting and netted a late goal as we beat Bayern Munich 5-2.

Under Kwame Ampadu, Smith Rowe’s form has also been strong, as he’s netted five goals and helped us reach the FA Youth Cup last-16.

LAST TIME WE MET

Goals from Vlad Dragomir and Chuba Akpom at Emirates Stadium sealed a comfortable win for us.

Dragomir opened the scoring shortly after the half-time break, before Akpom doubled our lead late on.
