Tomiyasu reaches Asian Cup quarter-finals

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Takehiro Tomiyasu has reached the Asian Cup quarter-finals with Japan following Wednesday's 3-1 victory over Bahrain.

Tomi played the full 90 minutes at centre-back, watching Ritsu Doan give his nation the lead in the 31st minute of the match.

Takefusa Koba made it 2-0 shortly after half-time and, while a Zion Suzuki own goal planted a seed of doubt, Japan restored their two goal lead through Ayase Ueda with just under 20 minutes remaining.

The win means that Japan, who are the competition's most successful team in history with four titles, will now face the winner of Iran v Syria, which kicks off at 4pm (BST) today.

Iran finished top of Group C with nine points from three games, while Syria came third in Group B but still advanced to the knockout stages with four points.

The quarter-final will take place on Saturday, February 3 at 11.30am (BST).
