Suarez - I used to watch Bergkamp and Henry

Denis Suarez had his head turned by Arsenal as a youngster.

Our new loan signing spent time with Manchester City at the start of his career but, growing up, it was another Premier League side that caught his eye.

“One thing no one knows about me is that when I was little and I used to watch the Premier League on the TV, Arsenal were a team that really inspired me,” said Denis.

“I used to watch Bergkamp and Henry - they’re both legends of the club and hopefully we can follow in their footsteps.”

Interview

Unai Emery’s first memories of Denis Suarez

Unai Emery and Denis Suarez have been reunited at Arsenal, so we caught up with the head coach to find out more.

In an exclusive interview, Unai explains how he found out about the Spanish midfielder, Denis’ long-standing connection with our club, and what he’s like away from the pitch.

Unai, when did you first know about Denis Suarez?

When I was in Sevilla, Monchi - the sporting director - spoke about the possibility of bringing Denis Suarez to us. He started to play in Galicia in Spain, with Celta Vigo, but he was very young and signed at Manchester City. He played in their academy and I didn’t know him. Monchi spoke about him to me, about his qualities, the possibility to improve a lot with us at Sevilla. He came and played a lot of matches in one season with us. He helped us with his quality, and then he decided to go to Villarreal to continue improving. Then he arrived at Barcelona and played there.

How much has Denis improved since you brought him to Sevilla?

After Sevilla, he played at Villarreal and played in the Europa League semi-final against Liverpool, when they won against them. His way was giving him the possibility to play at Barcelona. But to play in the first XI there is very difficult. He played sometimes, but less than he wanted, and he helped them to win the Spanish league, and also played in the Champions League. He has experience and I want to use his experience and his quality here with us. It’s a big challenge for him to play here and continue improving.

Luis Enrique said that Denis is ‘loved by his teammates’ for his work without the ball. Do you agree?

He works every day with a very big ambition to improve, because he loves football. He’s usually speaking about football and when he was in Spain he said to us, and I read in the newspapers, that he was watching Arsenal matches when Arsenal were playing with Thierry Henry and the Invincible players. His decision to come here is because he thinks Arsenal is a big club.

Some people have compared Denis to Andres Iniesta. How are they similar?

I don’t think it’s good to do comparisons between players. He has his personality and also, I think it’s not good to give him pressure in this comparison.

What can you tell us about Denis’ personality away from the pitch?

He’s a very good person and a very straightforward person. My relationship with the players first is like a player, professional, and after is like a person.

‘Messi is the best… and Iniesta inspired me’

Denis Suarez spent more than five years at Barcelona and worked with some of the best players in the business.

It’s no surprise to hear him describe Lionel Messi as “the best player in the world”, but our new loan signing found even greater inspiration in another stellar attacking talent.

“The person I look up to most in the world of football is Andres Iniesta,” said Denis.

“He’s always been my idol, ever since I was young. As well as the fact that he plays in a similar position to me, I was also able to spend two years with him - I learned a lot from him. It’s always been a massive compliment to be compared to him.”

Suarez - Why I click with ‘football mad’ Emery

Denis Suarez and Unai Emery have history - and our new loan signing wants to create more memories now they’ve been reunited.

Suarez was at Barcelona in 2014 when Emery took him to Sevilla as part of the deal that saw Ivan Rakitic move in the opposite direction.

It worked out well - Suarez became a trusted member of Emery’s side and they won the Europa League together in 2015.

Nearly four years later the duo are back in tandem after Suarez completed a loan move to the Emirates. And the 25-year-old knows what to expect.

“I have a very good relationship with Unai Emery,” he told Arsenal Player. “I think he’s a very demanding coach and one of the best coaches in the world right now - I’ve been saying that for a while.

“Sevilla was my first year playing football at the elite level - my first year in the top division. I improved a lot as a player thanks to him. He really helped me. I think he was a big part of the reason I was able to go back to Barcelona after leaving on loan.

“The main thing is that he dedicates a great deal of time to his work. He spends many hours and days watching videos of other teams and his own side.

“His training sessions are really demanding and he ensures that the team is completely prepared. But as I say, the biggest thing is the time he dedicates to his work. As we’d say in Spanish, he’s ‘un enfermo del fútbol’ - football mad.”

Interview

'I've been pushing hard to come here'

Denis Suarez joined the club on loan on Thursday - and we sat down with him for his first interview as an Arsenal player to discuss a range of subjects.

Read on for a full transcript:

Denis, welcome to Arsenal. What have the last few weeks been like for you while you waited for this deal to happen?

First of all, thanks very much. I’m very pleased to be here and to be joining Arsenal. I’ve been pushing hard to come here. I’m finally here now and I’m really pleased.

You’ve worked with Unai Emery before, tell us about your relationship with him.

I have a very good relationship with him. I spent a year with him at Sevilla when we won the Europa League. I think he’s a very demanding coach and one of the best coaches in the world right now - I’ve been saying that for a while. I’m really happy to have the chance to work with him again and I hope that the rest of the season is successful for me and the club.

Why did it work for you and Unai together at Sevilla?

I think he’s a great coach. That was my first year playing football at the elite level - my first year in the top division. I improved a lot as a player thanks to him. He really helped me. I think he was a big part of the reason I was able to go back to Barcelona after leaving on loan.

What makes Unai a special coach?

I think the main thing is that he dedicates a great deal of time to his work. He spends many hours and days watching videos of other teams and his own side. His training sessions are really demanding and he ensures that the team is completely prepared. But as I say, the biggest thing is the time he dedicates to his work. As we’d say in Spanish, he’s ‘un enfermo del fútbol] - football mad.

Who do you already know in the Arsenal squad and who has been in touch?

I’ve spoken to Hector. He wrote me a message when the rumours started to come out in the press about me joining Arsenal. I hope he can recover as soon as possible. It’s a shame that he’s injured because I’d love to play with him, but I’m sure he’ll be back soon.

What are your hopes and dreams for the rest of this season?

I’ve come here to play as much as possible and try to help the team qualify for the Champions League. I’d like to win the Europa League with Arsenal too - why not? It’s a trophy I won under Unai Emery at Sevilla and I’d love to win it again here.
