This Saturday sees us head to Leicester to take on the Foxes in league action, with the journey to the east Midlands sparking plenty of happy memories for Gooners.
That’s because there have been some epic encounters when we’ve taken to the field at Filbert Street and the King Power Stadium during the Premier League era, throwing up everything from superb saves, heroic hat-tricks and fantastic goals galore.
We’ve taken a trip down memory lane to allow you to reminisce about five classic clashes all over again:
August 27, 1997
Leicester 3-3 Arsenal
One of the Premier League’s all-time classics, thanks to some Dennis Bergkamp stardust. The Dutchman started the scoring with an outrageous curler into the top corner from the edge of the box, and on 61 minutes he added a second to put us seemingly in control.
However a frantic finale would see Emile Heskey and Matt Elliott draw the Foxes level, but in stoppage-time our Dutchman effortlessly pulled a David Platt pass out of the sky, beat Elliott, controlled and finished to complete an incredible hat-trick. Steve Walsh still grabbed a share of the spoils, but Bergkamp’s brilliance is the abiding memory.
December 4, 1999
Leicester 0-3 Arsenal
We moved back to the top of the Premier League thanks to this win at Filbert Street, with Gilles Grimandi starting the scoring when he was left unmarked to head home a corner on 23 minutes.
The lead was doubled through another unlikely source when Lee Dixon’s effort went in off Steve Guppy after good work by Thierry Henry, with Marc Overmars wrapping up the victory with 15 minutes still to play.
January 23, 2002
Leicester 1-3 Arsenal
A key victory in the title race saw us keep up the pressure on Manchester United, with things beginning well when a firm Giovanni van Bronkhorst header secured his first Gunners goal, before the red-hot Henry slid home his 24th of the campaign to put us in firm control before half-time.
However Muzzy Izzet pulled one back for the Foxes to set up a grandstand finish, with the nerves only calmed when Sylvain Wiltord brilliantly whipped the ball into the top corner from range to secure all three points.
September 26, 2015
Leicester City 2-5 Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez stole the show by scoring three of this enthralling encounter’s seven goals, but it was Jamie Vardy who put the Foxes in front after 13 minutes. Theo Walcott soon equalised, before the Chilean began to purr.
He tapped home an easy chance on 33 minutes, and then after the break outjumped Kasper Schmeichel to flick home a header before lashing in a low 25-yarder to seal the matchball. Vardy netted again late on, but the final word went to us via Olivier Giroud in stoppage-time.
October 30, 2021
Leicester City 0-2 Arsenal
A fast start saw us race into a two-goal lead thanks to a clever Gabriel header from a Bukayo Saka corner, and Emile Smith Rowe tucked home a second after just 18 minutes, but the game’s most memorable moment came at the other end.
Just before half-time, James Maddison looked to have curled a free-kick into the top corner to give the hosts hope, but Aaron Ramsdale produced a magnificent save to somehow tip it onto the bar and keep the ball out, setting us on the way to a win.
